About Life Coaching and ADD / ADHD Coaching
These are all classic challenges shared by people who are highly compassionate, emotional, sensitive, intelligent, caring, enthusiastic, creative, spontaneous, talented and unconventional. People like us often have an unusual ability to help others solve problems, but often have difficulty managing our own time, space, things, money, careers, self-care, and relationships. "I know what to do but can't make myself do it" The above statement is a common characteristic of creative, right-brain people and ADDers. Because we thrive on spontaneity and the joy of discovery, we tend to get bored almost to physical pain by certain repetitive routines. Because we can see solutions so quickly in our minds, we tend to get overwhelmed and almost paralyzed by things that take a long time to implement or have lots of steps to follow. We love to discover, research and learn. We are great at it. We thrive on new challenges. We read books, go to workshops and get excited about new systems, gadgets and approaches to help us manage our time, increase productivity, reduce procrastination, and become more organized. We may even take great joy in setting up a new system, yet somehow, we often have great difficulty using our own systems consistently. We are off to the next new and exciting idea. We often "know" what to do, but are baffled by our inability to make ourselves do things we really want to do! "It seems so effortless and easy for other people, why can't I just do it?" ADDers and Creatives tend to have a strong preference for keeping options open. Therefore we experience life very differently from the majority of people. We need to be inspired in order to act. Even though we crave structure, making plans can feel like it takes the joy out of things. Being different isn't easy. Other people seem to be able to make decisions easily and follow through on their plans. Why can't we? Why do we seem to change our minds so often? Why can't we be more like them when we want to be? This difference affects our careers, businesses, relationships and our physical, mental, and emotional health. Being stuck in indecision can leave us feeling stressed, depressed, and hopeless. It may seem like everyone else is able to make work and career choices, build satisfying relationships, get organized and get things done almost effortlessly compared to how challenging it is for you to get yourself through the day and complete the tasks and projects you set out to do. I know how bad it feels sometimes. But I also know from personal experience, there is a way out! It is possible to get unstuck and create a more satisfying and fulfilling life. That's what I help people do.
What Causes ADD-Like Traits? If any of the above challenges describe you, it's very likely you have a Creative Personality Type, or you may have ADHD or ADD-like traits. ADD-like traits can be caused by MANY factors including: the environment you live or work in, being overstressed, high sensitivity, depression, poor nutrition, not exercising regularly, allergies, hormonal changes, medications, brain injuries, traumatic childhood, abuse, grief, and many other life situations. Why Coaching Really WorksWhatever the underlying cause of your challenges, if you feel "stuck" and unable to make progress toward your goals because of your inconsistencies, there is hope! If your relationships, work life, finances and overall quality of life are suffering, and you have read the books and taken the courses but things aren't getting much better, it's time to try something very different. Something that really WORKS!
It's like the difference between attending a lecture or being immersed in hands-on experiential learning that is completely customized to you. When you need to learn a new language, would you prefer to read a book? or visit the country with a guide that can translate for you and help you practice the new language? My coaching approach is a lot like helping you learn a new language for functioning in the world and for how you treat yourself. The coaching agenda is completely centered around your unique needs and respecting your natural abilities and preferences. It's not about me pushing any particular system.
It's about learning to accept what you can't change about yourself, and working with it instead of beating yourself up trying to be something you aren't Private coaching with me involves starting where you are and designing a "bridge" to get you where you want to be. I help you get clear about your priorities and the results you want. Together, we figure out "how" to make it happen: how to clear obstacles, design your environment to support you, and what are the best strategies to inspire, motivate, and "drive" you into action. Once you understand the keys to harnessing your own attentiion and motivation you will start moving toward the calmer, simpler, more productive life you want. I draw upon a wide range of coaching and consulting skills to support you in whatever areas of your life are causing you the most distress: your home, business, career, school, boss, family, marriage, children, money, overspending, time management or any other area of life that is being affected by your ADD-like traits such as procrastination, difficulty planning and prioritizing, difficulty implementing your plans / to dos, difficulty managing disctractions, communicating, listening effectively, etc.
What can you expect from coaching sessions with me?Through a combination of coaching, asking penetrating questions, teaching, reframing, and encouraging and supporting, I help you get ultra-clear on your priorities and use them to make decisions more easily. As a bonus, the side effects of our work together include, rebuilding your sense of self-worth and confidence, building better boundaries with yourself and others and a greater sense of personal mastery. You will develop the skills and strategies that make it a LOT easier to design more success into your life every day. I know ADD is a highly controversial label for some people and ultimately, I prefer not to put a label on you, because whatever the underlying source of your problems, what's most important is that you accept yourself as you are. Once you are able to forgive and embrace your "imperfections" you will be able to use all that freed energy to focus on your strengths and design a life that allows you to be your authentic self AND fulfill at least a reasonable amount of your vast potential. Sometimes self-acceptance means adjusting your expectations to accept what you can't control, and sometimes that means stepping out of your comfort zone to change the things you CAN change. Either way, I'll be there to support you, encourage you, and empower you to make it happen! Coaching, though extremely effective, is not for everyone. I use an intuitive, cognitive - behavioral approach to helping you uncover any "blind spots" or self-limiting beliefs that are blocking you. The coaching process assumes you are a "whole" person, reasonably healthy, and ready and able to change. It works best for people who are receiving proper professional treatment for any medical disorders they may have. If you are willing and ready to change your perspective on things so that you can truly clarify and simplify your life, then you are a great candidate for coaching with me.
